Waldorf Astoria
Hotel Information: Host to generations of royalty, US presidents, heads of states, socialites, and celebrities, The Waldorf Astoria has been one of the world's most well-known hotels for more than a century. The main lobby's expanse of mahogany, marble, and crystal exemplifies the hotel's Art Deco grandeur.
Insider tip: The hotel's Peacock Alley restaurant/bar commemorates a 300-foot marble promenade linking the original 1893 Waldorf with a 1897 addition, The Astor, at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. With ladies in plumage, finely dressed notables such as the Astors, the Vanderbilts, and the Whitneys strolled between the two buildings, leading a society columnist to bestow the name. (The original hotels were razed in 1929 to make room for the Empire State Building, and a new hotel--at the time, the world's largest--was constructed at the present site.)
The Waldorf Astoria offers 1,416 high-ceilinged guestrooms and suites in a 42-story building. English-manor-house decor includes formal window treatments and crystal-and-brass lamps. Beds are furnished with triple sheeting and down comforters. Amenities include two-line speakerphones, and high-speed Internet access (surcharge). Other amenities include safes accommodating laptop computers, clock radios, and televisions offering pay movies (surcharge). Marble bathrooms contain shower/tub combinations or stall showers without tubs. |
